Share |

The main function of the forceps is to hold, stabilize, rotate, reduce and compress bone they are also used when positioning bone screws and plates and insert K-Wire. They are used during orthopedic surgeries to correct fractures. As per the surgeons preference some may have speed locks that can be operated with one hand others may have rachets or adjustable jaws and hinges.
Narrow jaw forceps are best suited for hand and foot surgery as they cannot handle muscles and other soft tissues. Broad jaw forceps are used for plate placements and screw insertions. They may even have ringed jaws that hold the fractured parts firmly in place and the screw can be inserted in the center.
The type of forceps is decided on the basis of bone size, purpose and location of the bone. Care should be taken as not to apply excessive force on a particular kind of forcep as it may get permanently damaged.
