Bone Gouge
Share |

A bone gouge is similar to a chisel in more ways than one. It may be unifacial or bifacial with the working edge similar to chisel. The edge is steep angled emerging from a wide based triangle. It is used to scoop out the softer bone tissues.
Blade edge of the gouges are usually is not flat, but curved or angled. If the angle of the plane of the blade is on the outer surface of the curve the gouge is called an 'incannel' gouge, otherwise it is known as an 'outcannel' gouge. Gouges with angled rather than curved blades are often called 'vee-parting tools'. Variations include 'crank-neck' gouges, 'spoon-bent' gouges, etc.
