Pelletizers are used by pharmaceutical manufacturers to manufacture various size pellets. Pharmaceutical pelletizers are also referred as spheronizers. They are process machines that transform materials into pellets for use in various operations.
Pelletization Process or Spheronization in Pharmaceutical Industry
The process involves agglomeration of active pharmaceutical ingredients and forming them into spherically shaped beads also known as pellets. A wet mixture of active pharmaceutical ingredients is extruded, broken down and rounded in a spheronizer.
Pelletizing systems use dry or wet processes. In the wet process, pelletizers have water jets and a water-slide to contact and cool the process material. After water jets spray the material, the excess water moves out through a trough. There is a cutting area with bolt-on knives where the process material is moved. With these pelletizers, the pellets are washed with water and then dried with a centrifugal water separator. In dry-process systems, the water is removed before the process materials enter the cutting chamber. The pelletizing system can be hydraulic or electric powered. These pellets form tablets, pills or capsules.

Importance of Pelletizer in Pharmaceutical Industry
- The machine produces a smooth tablet or capsule surface suitable for thin layer coating.
- It helps in forming granules with a specific bio-consumable shape.
- It limits dusting and ensures fines generation
- Pelletizer densifies the surface for stability
