Bariatric Wheelchair

A bariatric wheelchair is a mobile chair designed to carry a person whose body weight is in the obese range. Unlike standard wheelchairs, bariatric wheelchairs are designed for larger frames and higher weight capacities. A standard wheelchair's weight capacity is generally less and ranges near to 250 pounds approx. Whereas, a bariatric power wheelchair is a strong, heavy duty wheel chair with weight capacity of 500 pounds, approx.

  • For more patient comfort, the bariatric wheelchair can store the weight of the chair, allowing clinical staff to simply roll the patient for quick and easy weighing. 
  • Heavy-duty construction and large rubber deck safety plate platform with integral ramp makes the chair a perfect solution for the extra weighing patients.
  • A heavy duty bariatric wheelchair has the same features as a reclining wheelchair, with the only difference in size capacity.


Product Description
The metallic frame of bariatric power wheelchair is painted or powder coated like epoxy coating, polyester coating, chrome plated etc. The frame of bariatric chair comes in various colors but black is usually preferred. The seat and back of bariatric power wheelchair are available with padded upholstery, the covering can range from cloth to new synthetic fabrics to leather, rexine, nylon etc. The arm rests of bariatric chair are there with both the options, fixed or removable. The footrests and legrests can also be removed or fixed. Wheel locks or brakes are inbuilt features in these chairs.

Getting the Right Fit
After a patient is prescribed the bariatric wheelchair most patients will need to go to a special medical supply store to check the proper dimensions, as prescribed by the doctor. Here are some points, that need to be considered:

  • Seat height: Which is the height from the seat to the floor.
  • Seat Width: This is the measurement of the seat across. Doctors will require the measurements to leave at least an inch on each side of the patient.
  • Seat Depth: The seat depth is the measurement of the seat from where the knees will rest to where the seat meets the back.
  • Body Weight: The model or design chosen needs to be able to support your maximum weight potential.
  • Backrest Height: The backrest should reach your mid shoulder blade while supporting the apex of your back.
  • Armrest Height: To determine the necessary armrest height, measure the distance from your seat to your forearm while it’s at a right angle.
  • Tires: Airless and solid tires will provide increased mobility, durability and a smoother ride.
