Backrest as the name suggest is a rest or support for the back. In almost all hospitals, there is the need for  backrests for the comfort of the patients. It is a support that you can lean against while sitting. There are some hospital beds with built in backrests while in some others, a separate back rest is required. The hospital bed backrest recognizing the special needs of patients and nursing home residents, is available with optional, built-in convoluted (egg crate) foam pads, a support that you can lean against while sitting. According to the patient's comfort bed backrest can be adjusted. The backrest is attached to the bed and manually adjusted and it allow easy removal for washing and making of the bed. It is foam or fiber filled. There are also self inflating backrest which are used in hospitals and homes and can also be carried around. This is a kind of pillow which can be inflated according to the patient's requirement.
