Kurumba paintings arises from the kurumba tribes known to inhabit in the Nilgiri Hills in Tamil Nadu and some parts of Kerala. They are no less beautiful or unique than the Madhubani or Warli paintings but still they lack support. These paintings show old tradition and values of their tribes which are usually depicted by rocks.
 
About Kurumba Tribe
Kurumba tribes originate in the region of Kerala . Some of the anthropologists have identified that these tribes also includes Alu-Kurumbas, Betta-Kurumbas, Jenu-Kurumbas, Kurubas, Mudugas, Mulla-Kurumbas, Palu-Kurumbas and Urali-Kurumbas. Some of them also strive in the dense forest ranges and at the bottom of hills . Kurumba tribes are considered as one of the backward tribes of country with no accessibility to modern amenities and maximum of them are illiterates.
 
Designs
Generally kurumba paintings demonstrate rock paintings. Other designs which are found in these paintings are like : Peacock , Hand Prints , Deer , Flora , Fauna , Geometric Shapes , Figure Sitting on Elephant and Tiger.
 
Material Used :
Kurumba paintings shows a very typical look in which a lot of stress is applied on colors. Generally red ocher color is used. Some of the materials used by kurumba tribes in these paintings are :
  • Charcoal: To give special effect
  • Red Earth
  • Resin of Vengai Tree: To give a burnt sienna look.
