Handicraft is a traditional form of creative artwork which involves making decorative items using hands. Since ancient times many people rely on this form of art to earn their living, whereas others simply take this as an satisfying hobby. Handicrafts items are not restricted to simple decorative materials,instead they can be worn or used in any form. This creative technique is basically considered traditional because it reveals the culture and traditions of a particular region. It also demonstrates the perfection and accuracy of craftsmen. Craftsmen of different regions and tribes use different tools,techniques and patterns to create an object. Jewelery making, needlework, quilting, weaving,pottery and metal work are the main items which constitute Indian handicraft industry.

Present growth
The present scenario of Indian handicrafts industry is highly influenced by the generations which have passed by. Most of the ancient craft forms are popular even today, whereas the change in tastes and preferences of people have resulted in the invention of some new designs and patterns also. Increasing demand for traditional goods has led to the increasing demand of handicraft products in domestic market. But Indian handicrafts has gained popularity in foreign market as well. Brocades and zari work on sarees,shawls or any other garment is in great demand. Goods manufactured from Kashmir, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, North Eastern states etc are in vogue. The most demanded products in domestic market and abroad at present are wall hangings, silver cutlery, brass pots, wooden sculptures, marble and wood inlay work, traditional paintings, enameled furniture, stone and wood carvings, metal, wood and stone sculptures etc.
Future growth
Since handicraft industry is a labor intensive industry,so it can be regarded as a main source of employment too, because most of the weaker sections of society and women from rural areas are involved in this industry. After having a preview of the market demand of handicraft industry,it can be very appropriately predicted that Indian handicraft industry would grow rapidly in future. Apart from being a major source of income for many rural communities,it is a major revenue generator for the country with a consistent growth of 20% since past few years. Rural and urban areas of the country are flooded with various small units of this industry.
