How to Clean Marble Stairs

Marble stairs look beautiful and bring a sense of luxury to your home interiors or outdoors, wherever you decide to install stairs made from beautiful marble stone! However, you must also know that although marble can be there forever, it wears and weathers over time. You have to take a lot of care while cleaning marble stairs to maintain that pristine, polished marble stair of yours. Provided the sense of joy that is granted by the stunning marble staircases, this seems very little a task, isn't it! If you are now thinking how to clean marble stairs of your home, then here are some tips to help you. Tips to Take Care when Installing Marble Stairs
Although marble weathers but does not stain or discolor, especially from the underside, on it's own though you have to be careful around light colored marble due to its transparency.

 

  • When installing stairs of marble stone, pay attention towards the setting material as it affects the surface of the marble. Don't use mastic (the waterproof putty-like paste used in as a joint-sealer or filler.) It can discolor your white marble stairs (marble can turn to different colors mostly light yellow.)
  • Don't use a "construction adhesive" to install the stair treads. Instead use a white multipurpose thinset on a mud bed.
  • Never use silicone or any other type of petroleum base adhesives to install stairs of marble stone. It makes the marble surface look wet usually where the stone and adhesive touch.
  • It is also important to maintain good seal as your marble stair is prone to stain.
 
When stairs are installed, you won't have to care much for sometime about marble cleaning but you should, anyway, start taking care of it since beginning so that it doesn't stain unnaturally. This will give a good long life to your marble stairs.
 

 

Tips for Maintaining and Cleaning Marble Stairs
Your marble stairway will develop a patina over time. It will become a honed surface, and will also look weathered. If using vinegar, lemon juice, tomato juice and other acids to remove stains, remember it can etch the stone.

 

  • Use Ivory soap or stone soaps and avoid using orange or other citrus based cleaners, and soaps, as well as glass cleaners for cleaning marble stairs.
  • As stair steps are where most of the accidents happen in a house, keep in mind that polished marble can be a bit slippery. As such, if possible, choose honed, acid washed or brushed finishes for marble stairs installations.
  • If you already have a slippery marble staircase, you can have honing and acid washing done there.
 
If your marble stairs have got yellowing stain, you must take help of marble restoration professional. Usually, this type of stains can only be corrected by replacement.
