Ancient Greek Arms, Weapons and Armor

One of the most pre-eminent and powerful civilization of earlier times is the Ancient Greek civilization. Ancient Greeks are known to have much efficient, experienced naval and military force. In ancient battle, these forces use sharp weapons for fighting instead of shells and guns. Also known as hoplites, ancient greek soldiers were weaponed and armored men who fought in usually broad daylight using sharp weapons such as spears, double-edged swords, shields etc.
 
Some significant arms, weapons and armors used in earlier times are :
Hoplite: It as an important ancient armor used by greek war lords. Since ancient Greek soldiers were armored and weaponed men, they were known as hoplites. Having a metal shield for defending, a hoplite directly breaks the weapons of his opposing enemy. A hoplite wore a helmet and also carry a spear and a double-edged sword. A spear of a hoplite was six to eight feet long.
  • Shield: This is one of the most important greek weapon used by hoplite to collapse spear of an opponent.
 
  • Spear: Also known as dory, spear comprises sharp iron spear head on a wooden shaft and a bronze butt. If by chance, spear head breaks off than the butt part of spear can be used as an extra weapon to fight with the enemy.
 
  • Ballista: This weapon has the capability to shot multiple arrows at long ranges at a time.
 
  • Sword : lso known as dagger, this weapon was mainly used when a spear was completely broken. It consists short blade and the spike which can be fitted onto hand grip.
 
  • Catapult: Usually used for attacking, this ancient weapon was used to throw large objects and stones at the opposing army.
 
  • Helmet: Worn by greek soldiers, 2 types of helmets were used in earlier ancient imes. One is made up of bronze which covers your whole head apart from eyes and mouth. The other one, also made up of bronze consists flaps to cover the soldier's cheeks and the back of his neck but it doesn't cover face and ears.
  • Breastplate: This was worn by greek soldiers to cover their back and chest. It is made up of metal bronze.
 
  • Leg guards :These weapons are worn by soldiers which cover their legs from the knee down to the ankle.

 

Bringing many innovations and changes in the warfare technology, ancient greek weapons were always perceived as foremost as compared to weapons of the neighboring countries.
