The machine is used for friction stir welding process. Friction stir welding is a friction welding technique, which involves moving one component connected to the other through a common interface, while applying a compressive force across the joint. The welding process can also be used to make hybrid components by joining dissimilar materials such as aluminium and magnesium alloys.
Welding Process
The welding process comprises of forcing a non-consumable rotating tool into the materials to be joined. This is followed by bringing the central pin, or probe with the shoulder into contact with the parts to be welded. The rotation of the machine heats up and thickens the materials in contact. As the machine moves along the fusion line, the material from the front edge of the equipment moves around the thickened annulus to the back, thereby reducing the interface.
