A function generator is an electronic test device that is commonly used to generate electric waveforms. The waveforms generated by these generator can be either repetitive, or single-shot, which requires some kind of internal or external activating source.

It is capable of generating different types of voltage patterns at various amplitudes and frequencies. Response of a circuit to common input signals can also be tested using these generator.

Analog function generators usually generate a triangle waveform, which serves as the basis for all of its other outputs.
Like most signal generators, function generators may also consist of an attenuator and various means of modulating the output waveform.
These generators often have the ability to automatically and repetitively sweep the frequency of the output waveform between two operator-determined limits.
It consist of in-built frequency counters to accurately display and set output frequencies.
