Skimmer

Oil skimmers are oil / water separators that have proved to be a very cost-effective way to remove oil from water. A comprehensive range of oil skimming equipment for both the rectangular and circular tank configurations are available in the market that suit the different conditions of skimming in both manual as well as automatic operating units. These different types of equipment are designed and constructed in different configurations and designs to suit different requirements and operating conditions.

A brief description of these different types of oil skimmers is given below -

 

Roto Skimmer
Roto skimmer is the simplest and most economical skimming equipment, which has found wide applications in municipal and industrial wastewater applications. These skimmers consist of a slotted steel pipe that is installed with the edge slightly above the surface of liquid, so that when the edge is rotated below the surface, floatable solids and some liquid flow into the pipe openings and are flushed out of the tank for disposal. Roto skimmer comes in four basic types -

 

Scraper type power skimmer
Scraper type power skimmers are used with a traditional four shaft sludge collector. The equipment conveys the skimmings from liquid level, up to a dewatering beach and discharges into a trough, either sufficiently slopped or provided with a screw conveyor. Rigid and pivoted flight full length skimmers have found uses in applications where separate skimming and sludge scraping are needed. These skimmers mainly consist of pivoted flights at regular spacing along with two strands of chains.

 

Spiral skimmer
Spiral skimmers are skimming equipment that are mainly used for light frothy scums. The power operated, revolving spiral shaped blade, which is mounted ahead of a scum trough, skims the floating materials from the surface of tank and deposit it into the scum trough for further disposal.

 

Circular skimmer
Circular skimmers are used in applications wherein small volumes of skimmings are anticipated. Some common applications of these skimmers include primary clarifiers in sewage or industrial wastewater treatment plants where only a little amount of oils must be skimmed.

 

Roll skimmer
Roll skimmers are oil / water separators that have found wide applications in refining, petrochemical, automotive, steel mill, machine shop and similar industries. These are used to remove free mineral oil from the liquid surfaces. The skimming unit comprises of a pipe roll that revolves down into an oil film on the water surfaces and picks up an oil film on the roll surface. The adhering oil film is doctored off into a trough for farther removal. These skimmers can be designed either as pontoon mounted floating units or wall mounted fixed units.

 

Belt skimmer
Belt skimmers are similar in application and operation to that of role skimmers with the exception of the use of a belt instead of roll. An important benefit of a belt skimmer is that it combines the skimming and the lifting of skimmed oil to a higher point in a single operation.
