Pipes

Pipe plays major role in water distribution system. There are two main issues that are related to pipes - pie diameter and material for construction. There are different types of material that are used for constructing pipes. However the materials used depend on the nature of the fluid to be transferred. Pipes may be either placed underground or may be exposed to the natural outdoors.

 

The diameter of the pipe is calculated after taking into account the following water velocities:

 

Paints and Coatings
Various types of coatings and paints are provided to the pipes which are essential for their maintenance. A paint system comprises primer coatings followed by the finish paint coatings. Primer and finish paint coatings are applied in more than one coats. Multi coats are better than the equivalent single coat of higher thickness.

 

Synthetic enamels are more suitable for painting of external surfaces of pipes for ambient design temperatures, non corrosive environment and above ground location. For chemically aggressive environment, special paints are required for design temperature above 60°C. Coatings for immersed surfaces, should have better adherence and and greater resistance to molecular moisture absorption, moisture transfer, electroendosmosis and to abrasion.

 

Importance of Top Coatings
Top coatings are essential for protecting the primer coats by providing hard and impervious surface. However top coats should be compatible with the primer coats and should also provide an intimate bonding by wetting action on the previous coat. Some of the top coats that are used commonly are:

 

Vinyl Coatings
Vinyl coatings are the outcome of polymerization of poly vinyl chloride and poly vinyl acetate. However they are not very effective for covering rough and already corroded surface.

 

Chlorinated Rubber Coatings
They are successfully used for sea water applications but now they are replaced by epoxies.

 

Epoxies
Epoxies are now one of the most preferred coatings because of their excellent adhesion, good resistance to mechanical damage, high film build, and excellent resistance to chemicals and solvents.

 

Bituminous Coatings
Bituminous coatings are available for both summer and winter grades. If the coatings are applied at ambient temperature below 10°C, then extra precaution is needed to protect the coating against cracking and disbanding.

 

Zinc Coating
Zinc coating are formed by the galvanizing process. They are commonly resorted for drinking water pipes, cable trays and auxiliary supportive steel as in pipe trenches. However for direct burial service, these pipes are not suitable.
