CNG Tank

Share  |

CNG has evolved as an alternative to liquid based high pollution fuels at a very fast pace specially in the transport industry. A majority of natural gas vehicles operate using compressed natural gas (CNG). CNG Tanks are typically placed inside the boot of the vehicle, attached to the rear, top, or undercarriage of the vehicle in a tube shaped storage tank. Even a CNG tank is refueled in a similar manner, and in a similar amount of time, to a gasoline tank.

In a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Tank, natural gas is stored in gaseous form, hence, a larger than conventional tank is required to achieve a practical range, but, with an increase in the size of the tank, the weight also increases. However, present day innovations and inventions has replaced metal tanks with tanks made from a lightweight composite material. The tank itself is 1/3 the weight of an equivalent aluminum one while providing for increased capacity.

High Quality CNG Tank

A high quality CNG Tank possesses certain features for the sake of increasing both durability and safety; it comes with tank band, high-pressure line, tank frame, tank nozzle featuring an oval shaped ring, self-sealing structure using the pressure inside the tank and some other related components in a single modular unit. These attributes also permits for an installation of the tank on the production line, thus resulting in mass-production capability and stable production quality.

However, there are certain precautions that must be practised by those using CNG Tanks :-

  • Incase of refueling of the CNG Tanker, one must take care that the process should not be undertaken at a high speed as sudden variations in gas temperature can lead to dangerous situations.

  • To avoid any kind of risk, the CNG Tanks should have a residual pressure control system.

  • To reduce liner stress always take care that the operating temperature is kept at minus 40°C.

  • CNG Tanks must be safely fixed inside a Vehicle, to ensure that the pipe line stress during high speed refueling and vibrations while on the move are limited and gas leaks are avoided.
