Selecting the Right Extrusion Equipment

Selecting the most appropriate tool for an extrusion job goes a long way towards its success. In fact for the extrusion equipment, working conditions are also taken into consideration. Some of the considerations for the appropriate extrusion equipment includes:
Position of the component in relation to the hot billet and the extruded profile that emerges out.
The pressure applied on the metal being extruded.
Pressure and temperature to which the equipment are subjected to.
Resistance to thermal fatigue cracking.
Good compressive strength especially for dummy blocks.
Good bending strength when temperatures are high especially for dies and mandrels.
Heightened hot yield strength and hot hardness in case of shear blades.
High creep strength in case of dummy blocks.
Excellent temper resistance and resistance to softening at raised temperatures.

Test for Extrusion Equipment
A die is exposed to the most severe working conditions. Along with it liner, dummy block and the mandrel are other parts to experience high temperatures.
Typical temperatures experienced by these components are:

Aluminium extrusion: 400°–500°C

Copper and copper Alloys: 600°–1100°C

Stainless steel: 1100°–1250° C
