Cam Follower

Cam followers are similar to needle or cylindrical roller bearings with a thick-walled outer ring. The crowned outer surface of the outer ring prevents edge stresses if the roller runs in a tilted or inclined position. They are grease filled ready-to-mount units suitable for all types of cam drives, tracks and conveyor systems etc.

Instead of an inner ring cam followers have a solid threaded pin to allow the cam follower to be quickly and easily attached to the machine components by means of a hexagonal nut. Axial guidance is provided by an integral flange on the outer ring at the head of the pin and a side.

Cam followers are available in three different internal designs. Generally, the cam followers have concentric seating on the pin, but some are also available with an eccentric collar shrunk on to the stud. Cam follower bearings with collar enable an optimum interaction with the cam and allow less stringent manufacturing tolerances for the components.

Internal Clearance - The cam followers are produced with a radial internal clearance, which corresponds to the ones, specified for needle roller bearings and cylindrical roller bearings.

Cages - The cages of cam followers are made of steel.

Load Carrying Ability - The outer ring of a cam follower has only a small contact area with the surface. The actual contact area depends on the load and the crowning. The deformation of the outer ring caused by this limited contact alters the force distribution in the bearing and thus has an influence on load carrying ability. Cam followers are used for radial loads. If axial loads act on the outer ring they will produce tilting moments in the cam roller.
