Angular Contact Ball Bearing

Share  |

Angular contact ball bearings are non-separable type bearings and typically used for carrying combined (axial and radial) loads. They can carry pure axial load and operate in higher speed. That's why many people refer to them incorrectly as thrust bearings.

Physical Characteristics of Angular Contact Ball Bearings
Angular contact ball bearings have raceways in the inner and outer rings that are displaced with respect to each other in the direction of the bearing axis. Following table describes the characteristics of three types of angular contact ball bearings:

Type Characteristics
Standard Type  Available in bearing series 79, 70, 72, 72B, 73, and 73B.
Contact angles: 30°and 40° (with B) available.
Standard bearing cage type differs depending on bearing no.
High Speed Use    Available in bearing series 78C, 79C, 70C, 72C, and 73C.
Contact angles: 15°
All bearing accuracies JIS Class 5 or higher.
Standard bearing cage type differs depending on bearing no.
Ultra High Speed Use   Available in bearing series HSB9C, HSB0C, BNT0, and BNT2; all boundary dimensions agree with JIS series dimensions.
Contact angles: 15°; HSB type HSB9 and HSB0: 15°and 30°.
All bearing accuracies JIS Class 5 or higher.
BNT type internal design can be altered; suitable for higher speed applications than high speed use bearings.
HSB series bearings have smaller diameter of balls than high speed use type bearings, so benefit by less torque for high precision, high speed applications.
The inner ring bore diameter and outer ring inner diameter of the HSB series have a ground undercut on one side enabling easy oil flow.
For even higher speed applications, there is a bearing in this series equipped with ceramic ball bearings.
For standard cage types refer to Table 4; molded resin cages are also available for some varieties.

Types Of Angular contact ball bearings
There are three basic types of angular contact ball bearings:

Single Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings:
Single row angular contact ball bearings can carry axial loads acting in one direction only. Under the radial loads the force acting in the axial direction needs to be countered. It is usually adjusted against the second bearing. These bearings have one high and one low shoulder on each ring allowing more number of balls to be incorporated.

There are two standard versions of single row angular contact ball bearings used for different purposes.

  1. Only one bearing is used at a given bearing position.
  2. Two or more bearings are positions at the given bearing position. They may be mounted adjacent, back to back or face to face position. Universal matching bearings are specially manufactured to be placed in adjacent arrangement to get a pre determined internal clearance.

Double Row Angular Contact Ball Bearings
The design of double row angular contact ball bearings is similar to two single row angular contact ball bearings placed adjacent. The design is non separable type. The basic design does not have filling slots and can accommodate equal axial loads in both directions. The ones with a larger outer diameter have filling slots in one direction and have a pressed steel or machined brass cage. Bearings with E design have high load carrying capacity. They also have filling slots on one side and that allows incorporating large number of balls. They are also available with shields (non-rubbing type) and seals (low friction and rubbing type) on both sides. They are filled with lithium based grease that inhibits rust and can operate from temperatures -30° C to 110° C.

Four Point Contact Ball Bearings
Four point contact ball bearings are single row having raceways that enable to accommodate axial loads in both directions. They need lesser axial space and a two part inner ring. This allows large number of balls to be incorporated and carry larger loads. The bearings are separable type. They are designed to accommodate axial loads and arranged as thrust bearings with radial clearance.

Angular Contact Ball Bearings Specifications

Standard cage types: In the following table you can find out standard cage types for angular contact ball bearings. For high speed use angular contact ball bearings, molded resin cages and machined cages are widely used.

Dimensions - The dimensions are as per the ISO recommendations

Misalignment - They are designed to adjust to limited alignment errors. Any misalignment increases the running noise.

Tolerance - They are usually meant for normal tolerance but can be enhanced.

Internal Clearance - The internal clearance for single row angular contact ball bearing is obtained after mounting and depends on the second bearing that provides axial location in opposite direction. Click Here to view Axial internal clearance of double row angular contact ball bearings

Normal axial internal clearance is taken as standard in double row angular contact ball bearings.
