Gear Driven Spindle

Share  |

Gear driven spindles are a popular category of spindles used in various industrial applications. These spindles, as the name suggest, are driven by gears set inside the system or directly built into the system, which allow for large speed in a compact design. The Gear head provides a multi speed gear drive to the spindles and these type of spindles are used in those applications requiring high torque and low speed operation. They also provide high rigidity when subjected to heavy combined radial and axial loading. Gear driven spindles are highly recommended fro milling operations of any type.

Gear driven spindles design
Most gear driven spindles are available in two designs:

  • Parallel gear driven: This type of spindle usually has a set of precision helical gears with standard gear reduction of 3:1. The high gear reduction leads to low speed and high torque operation.
  • Worm gear driven: Whenever greater gear reduction is needed, the worm gear-driven spindle provides the solution. This spindle is available with gear reduction of 5:1 or 10:1 as standard.

General features of gear driven spindles
  • Most gear driven spindles are vailable in compact design, with gearing built directly in the system.
  • The performance of the spindle depends on gear reduction.
  • Ideal for hot and cold rolling mills.
  • Compact design of the spindle allows minimum space use.
  • Higher torques.
  • Improved rolled-product quality.
  • Less maintenance.
  • Good sealing features to avoid grease or oil contamination.

Performance features of gear driven spindles
  • High Accuracy
  • Runout Tolerances
  • High Torque Operation
  • High speed capability
  • High Rigidity
  • Smooth Running
  • Low Vibration

Advantages of gear driven spindles
  • Highly recommended in operations involving low speeds and higher torque.
  • Ensures smooth power transmission
  • Results in uniform size and improved surface quality of rolling mill products.
  • The dynamic balance characteristics of gear type flexible spindles minimize vibration.
  • This type of spindle increases the operating life of bearings, gears, and other components of connected equipment.
  • This spindle is said to be extremely rigid.
  • The spindle is well suited for removing large amounts of material quickly.
  • The versatility of the gear driven spindle makes it a great machine for different milling applications.
  • They provide improved surface finish, higher cutting accuracy and extended cutting tool life.
  • The gear-driven spindle is ideal for moderate to heavy radial and thrust loads associated with heavy duty boring and milling cutters.
  • Ability to handle the toughest of materials and the heaviest of cuts.
