Brazing Uses in Refrigeration / Air Conditioners
Condenser is an apparatus used to reduce vapor to its liquid state by removal of latent heat from the vapor. Condensers are mainly used in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Brazing is used for joining different components of condensers. It provides a safe and reliable joining technique.
Brazing Alloys
The brazing alloys used for brazing the condensers are mainly based on copper. Copper is the major constituent elements of these alloys with some amount of silver (up to 2%) and phosphorous (3 to 6%). Some other elements, which are also present in these brazing alloys are Al, Bi, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The maximum permissible amount of impurities shouldn't exceed 0.25% by weight.
The brazing alloys used for condensers have excellent flow characteristics due to the presence of phosphorous in them. They are suitable for brazing copper to copper or copper based materials. During brazing of copper to copper, there is no need of additional flux. However phosphorous based brazing alloys aren't used for joining the condensers, which may contact sulfur containing medias during the joining. They aren't used for joining steels or other materials containing iron, nickel or cobalt because it may form brittled phases in the joint.
Standard Forms
The brazing alloys used are found in many forms. The availability of brazing alloys in different forms make them easier to use and apply. The most common forms are:
- Wire
- Rods
- Ribbon
- Preforms: Rings, shaped parts, sections, stamped and shaped parts, lamina, discs, perforated plates
