Brass Brazing Alloys

Brass brazing alloys are used as filler material in the brazing of steels, tungsten carbide, brass and other metals and alloys. They are a cost effective alternative to silver brazing alloys, which provides high joint strength. These alloys offer good corrosion resistance with high thermal and electrical conductivity.

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc and the proportions of both the materials vary from one alloy to other. So a range of brasses can be created each having its unique properties. It is a versatile material and can be joined by different hot and cold processes. Some of the cold processes by which it can be joined are locked seam and clinched joints, nuts and bolts, rivets and adhesives. The hot processes for the joining of brass include soldering, brazing and welding.

Types of Brass

Calamine Brass
It is a special type of brass produced by a particular alloying technique using calamine, a zinc ore. It was produced using proportions of two-sevenths fine copper, four-sevenths calamine, and one-seventh shruff (old plate brass).

Gilding Metal
It is a form of brass comprising 95% copper and 5% zinc. Its uses include the jackets of bullets, enameled badges and other jewelery.

Pinchbeck
It is a form of brass, closely resembles gold in appearance, constituting copper and zinc mixed in proportions.

Cupronickel
It is an alloy of copper, nickel and strengthening impurities like iron and manganese. It doesn't corrode in seawater, because its electrode potential is adjusted to be neutral with regard to seawater. It is used for marine hardware, crankshafts and hulls of premium tugboats, fishing boats, etc.
