Brazing Uses in Refrigeration / Air Conditioners

Radiators
Radiators are special types of heat exchangers, which are designed to transfer heat energy from one medium to another for the purpose of heating and cooling. Most of the radiators are constructed to operate in automobiles, electronics and buildings. They are made of copper, brass and other similar materials. To join the different portions of the radiators, brazing is considered the most efficient metal joining methods. Brazing provides a solid and strong joints, which are essential for radiators.

Brazing Alloy
Copper based brazing alloys are frequently used for the brazing of copper-brass radiators. Copper is the main constituent element of these alloys occupying almost 60% by weight. Other major constituents are tin (15-16%), phosphorous (around 5%), and nickel (4 %). Aluminum, bismuth, cadmium, lead, and zinc are also present in smaller amounts. The brazing alloys can be applied on the brass tubes manually with conventional spraying guns or automatically with spraying units before brazing.

Brazing Atmosphere
For brazing radiators a flux-free brazing alloy in a nitrogen atmosphere is recommended. When furnace brazing is used an inert gas atmosphere is required. Apart from it flame brazing is also considered good for this purpose.

Cooling Systems
Cooling systems are largely used in the air condition and refrigeration technology. They are a very good example of application of brazing. These systems are made of copper, brass and steel so brazing is the most efficient metal bonding methods.

Brazing Processes
For brazing of different sections of cooling systems, flame brazing is the most suitable method. Induction brazing is also used for joining the systems. Both the methods provide strong and sturdy joints.

Brazing Alloys
Copper based brazing alloys are considered efficient for the brazing of cooling systems. Copper is the major constituent along with silver and phosphorous. Apart from these three aluminum, bismuth, cadmium, zinc, lead are also present in lesser quantities.

Forms of Brazing Alloys
The brazing alloys can be found in different forms and can be used according to the requirement. The different forms are:
  • Rods
  • Wire
  • Ribbon
  • Preforms: Rings, shaped parts, sections, stamped and shaped parts, lamina, discs, perforated plates.

Copper Pipes for Liquid Coolants
The copper pipes used in the refrigerators are also an excellent example of brazing applications. Brazing is the most suitable metal bonding processes to join the copper pipes. It provides clean, smooth and strong joints, which are essential for the refrigerators.

Brazing Processes
Induction brazing is the perfect brazing method to braze these copper joints. Induction heating offers uniform heating and joining of all the copper pipes. Flame brazing is also used however it isn't as exactly accurate as induction brazing.

Brazing Alloys
Copper based brazing alloys are used for brazing the copper pipes for liquid coolants. These alloys have copper as the primary constituent along with silver and phosphorous. Due to the presence of phosphorous it has excellent flow characteristics and no additional flux is required. It is good for joining copper to copper or copper based materials. They are found in different forms, such as wire, rods, ribbon, etc.

Hot Water Boiler
Central heating systems include hot water boilers, which are a good example of brazing applications. The hot water boilers are made of copper and contain through pipes which need joining.

Brazing Process
Flame brazing is the best process for the brazing of hot water boilers.

Brazing Alloys
Copper based brazing alloys are the most suitable for its brazing. They contain copper as the main constituent along with silver and phosphorous. Some other elements present in lesser amounts are aluminum, cadmium, bismuth, lead, and zinc.
