Spin-on Oil Filters

Spin on oil filters are especially fabricated for liquid filtration in internal combustion engines. This technique is vastly used in various automobile and mobile heavy equipments. To be applied in several engine applications, they are available in different combinations of sealing gaskets and mounting threads.

 

Fabrication

Spin on oil filters comprise a single unit of housing and filter element. The entire unit is replaced during maintenance. By using a threaded fitting, these oil filters can be attached to the side of engine block. Through out several years, many developments have been made in terms of filter size, involving length, diameter, sealing gasket diameter and thread size variation. The designs have also change, some of them uses internal by pass valve while some uses anti drain back valve. As per the engine and service requirements, filtration media also vary according to the model.

 

Material Used in Spin-on Oil Filters

Usually, cellulose filter media is used in disposable spin on oil filters. The top end spin on oil filters are made up of extremely fine metal mesh or micro glass where as high performance oil filters are made up of synthetic media. As the oil passes through the filter media, it captures organic and inorganic contaminants. The organic contaminants comprise bacteria and other organisms while inorganic consist dust which is ingested into the engine, along with trace amounts of wear metals from bearings and other internal components.
