By determining the tensile strength of a filter media, the expected life of a HEPA can be estimated. The operational life can be determined on the basis of observed decrease in the tensile strength of dry filter media with age and any further reduction in strength due to exposure to water. Although the life of a filter cannot be directly estimated using the data, there is a substantial decrease in the tensile strength with age for unfolded as well as folded media.
