Laboratory Valley Beater is a type of filter testing equipment that is used to beat the pulp in the laboratory. The beating is a starting step in the preparation and formation of tests sheets for testing and evaluating the physical properties of pulp that is used in filters.
Valley Beaters are intended for examining disintegration, mixing or beating of pulp under standard test conditions. In this test, a measured quantity of pulp of a particular stock concentration is beaten between the bed plate and the bars of the roll of a valley beater. Samples of beaten pulp are selected at different intervals during the beating and test sheets, formed from the samples are employed under standard tests. Suitable for routine testing of pulp in laboratory, the valley beaters come in a variety of designs and specifications to meet a particular application need.

Apart from a valley beater, refining or beating in a laboratory can also be done using a PFI mill or Voith laboratory refiner.

PF1 mill is generally used for the beating of pulp if its is available in very small quantity. The equipment requires only 30 gm of pulp for beating and is mostly used to compare variety of pulps, for example pulps made of various raw materials. The equipment can also be used for the quality control of pulps.

The Voith laboratory refiner can be used to beat samples of up to 2kg. The equipment can either be used as a conical refiner or as a disk refiner.

The operating conditions can be measured and calculated to simulate mill scale refiners in order to achieve realistic refining results, such as the energy consumption.
