The extended forms of vehicle's drive trains are called as Power take-offs. The vehicle's drive train is associated to power auxiliary equipments, like plows, winches, augers along with a lot of construction, material handling and agricultural implements. Proper handling and protection of Power Takeoff are required because if it is not done then these may entangle in the moving shaft.

Power take offs for motor vehicles are allowed to utilize the power trains of the motor vehicle to drive all the mounted or carried by auxiliary mechanisms. For this purpose, these power take offs are designed specifically. These auxiliary equipments are hydraulic lifts, winches etc. In art, for manual transmission, the power take-offs are very common. The adaptability of power takes-off for automatic transmission has little acceptability. Therefore, to use these for automatic transmission, the involvement should be from a gear inside the automatic transmission. It may also be operated from the fan belt section of the engine.

Configuration of Power Take Offs
The operation of Power Take-offs vary from each other, because there is a lot of variations of power transmission into them. In a tractor transmission Power takeoff, it is directly driven of the transmission. It can be disengaged by the tractor clutch. This kind of tractor Power Takeoff has the simplest configuration, but the disadvantage of such power takeoff is that it will be stopped when the speed of the tractor is slowed down. There is a disconnecting system present in such type of Power takeoff configuration. There is an overrunning clutch with such Power takeoff and whenever, the Power takeoff runs faster than the transmission, the existing clutch disconnects the system. This disconnection/disengagement prevents such Power takeoff system from driving the tractor which consists high inertia.

Tractor having live Power takeoff, contains two-stage clutch. By pressing the clutch by half way, transmission can be disengaged half and pressing the clutch fully, the entire transmission can be stopped. This makes it possible to change the gears or slow down the speed of the vehicles though the Power Takeoff runs. Independent vehicle Power Takeoff has a separate clutch. Accompanied with a live Power Takeoff, an independent Power Takeoff is allow for total control over the tractor. Independent power Takeoff may have either hydraulic control or mechanical control.

Applications of Power Take Offs
Power Take Offs are used as power auxiliary units in trucks, tractors etc. These are also used as tipping mechanisms or dumping mechanisms, snowplows, lifts, cranes and compactors. A truck Power Takeoff may also be used as a fire equipment on a fire truck, cement mixer, sewer cleaning trucks, sweeper vehicle etc. These are designed in such a way so that these can draw energy from the vehicle's engines for the implementation of different applications. These can easily be connected and disconnected due to their special design.

Technical Standardization of Power Take Offs
An Power takeoff must be fully standardized in terms of speed and dimension. For an agricultural Power takeoff, the specification for operational calls should be 540 revolution/minute. This standard is abbreviated as RPM. The rotational speed for a shaft should have 6 splines on it if its rotational speed is 540 rpm. The diameter should be of 1". Two new specifications has been implemented, which can support high power applications, operational speed is 1000 RPM and their shafts size is also different. The larger and smaller shaft have 20 splines (1¾" diameter) and 21 (1" diameter) respectively.

Split Shaft Power Take-offs
Split Shaft Power takeoff assists for driving both the auxiliary and the vertical equipments by a single engine. These Split Shaft Power take-offs are designed accordingly so that this thing can be made possible. In the gearbox, by switching the mode of operation with the main clutch, these can supply engine power to either the equipment or to the vehicle's drive axle. The design of this is made in such a way so that these can run the auxiliary equipment and the vehicle's axle alternatively, but not in the same time. These power take-offs are applied in different applications like concrete pumpers, compressors, power oil drilling rigs, pumps and lifts.

Safety Measures for Power Take Offs
  • Don't step over a running Power takeoff.
  • Body parts and all clothes must be kept away from a running Power takeoff.
  • If there is any damage in Power takeoff, immediately repair it.
  • Safety should be given priority while working in a Power take off. Pat full attention towards your work.
