Geared Actuator

Share  |

For moving or controlling a mechanism or system, the mechanical device which is used is called as Actuator. The actuator is also called as artificial agent or intelligent agent, although it is a physical mechanism. A procedure that puts something into spontaneous action, is called as an Geared Actuator. This procedure assists an agent to act upon an environment. The stated agent may be an autonomous being or an artificial intelligence agent. Gear Actuators are considered as the final elements in the control system. After getting the low power signals, they amplify these signals (command signals) according to the required output. Actuators have the ability to generate both types of motion, the linear motion as well as circular motion. Some specific actuators are specialized in generating linear motion, like piezoelectric actuators.

Application of Common Actuators
  • In human body - Fingers, legs, arms, hands.
  • For mechanical purpose - Hydraulic pistons, motors etc.
  • For virtual instrumentation - In virtual instruments, actuators are used along with sensors as hardware complements. Actuators are used in computer programs of virtual instruments, so that these can act upon the real world objects.
  • In engineering - Transducers are used in engineering and actuators are the subdivision of these transducers. Transducers convert the input signals (electrical signals) into kinetic form. The applications of actuators in the field of engineering are: pneumatic actuators, hydraulic pistons, comb drive, electrical motors, relays, thermal bimorphs, electro active polymers etc.
  • Mail transfer agent - Used for updating softwares which are used in transferring mails.

Types of Geared Actuators
On the basic of different types of motion, classification of actuators is done. Actuators are able to generate two types of motion, namely linear motion and rotatory motion. On the basic of types of motion, actuators are of two types:

Linear Actuator
By housing a linear bearing in an aluminum body, a linear actuators has been developed. This actuators are versatile in nature. The linear bearing within the actuators provides very flat and unruffled linear movement and capability of high cross-load bearing.

A light but rigid hollow shaft is used as a ram shaft of the linear actuator. This ram shaft is hard crone plated and it is grounded very carefully. A ball screw is used to provide linear motion to the ram. The inner face of the ram tune is put into position on the nut of the ball screw for use. The ball screw moves the ram tube at the time of its rotation. This movement is in or out of the linear actuator. To drive the ball screw, a pair of incomparable four-point contact and zero clearance ball bearings have been used. Pre-loaded balls are attached to these bearings. This attachment helps the bearings in taking adequate axial, moment and radial loads.

Rotary Actuator
The drive for the main axis of the manipulator arm is formed by rotatory actuator. The main components of a rotatory actuators are: a warm gear box, casting and slewing ring bearing. Again, the slewing ring bearing is consisted of preloaded balls. Due to these preloaded balls, the rotatory actuators are able to take axial load, substantial amount of moment and transverse load. PMDC motors are used to run the rotatory actuators. A self locking gear box is used for connecting PMDC motor to warm gear.
