While searching for HEPA air filters you will come across true HEPA filter and HEPA like filters. But what exactly it is? True HEPA filter is a genuine HEPA filter that passes the certain mandatory tests. After clearing the test a serial number is assigned to the true HEPA filter. This serial number is based on the capability of trapping 99.97% particulates of 0.3 microns in size. You will find the test result printed on true HEPA filter. As true HEPA filters are more efficient so these are expensive than the others.
Before buying do check the serial number and make sure that for true HEPA filter test results show "at 0.3 microns are 99.97% or above".
If the packing of true HEPA filter does not state the particle size as 0.3% and 99.97% the capturing capability, then it is not the true but HEPA like filter.
HEPA Filter
HEPA filter stands for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter that is the most efficient filter. HEPA filter can filter out 99.97% of particulates from air that are 0.3 microns in size. This efficiency is not shown by any other filter. Through HEPA filtration dust, allergens, pollens, danders and other types of allergens can be removed efficiently.
Life of a true HEPA filter is between 6 months to three years. This varies with the type of environment, filter material and how the HEPA filter has been constructed.
Although HEPA filter is very strong in capturing the allergens and all but still you will have to replace it regularly to increase its efficiency. Also HEPA filter uses the fan while working that can be bit noisy for some.
