Dry Cutting of Gears

One of the most significant developments that have taken place in the gearing industry today is the Dry cutting of gear-related products. Dry gear cutting is now considered has resulted in a major breakthrough in terms of productivity, economy and even ecology. New gear manufactures has now extended the technology beyond the boundaries of hobbing process to include the process of gear shaping. There has been major advances done in the field of spiral bevel gear dry cutting. The needs of the dry process has placed huge demands and expectations from the machine tool manufacturers. There is now a need to produce both statically and dynamically rigid machines. This is the way for absorbing increased energy produced as a result of the dry cutting process.

The three important parameters in dry cutting of gears are the following:
  • Increased power
  • Higher cutting speeds
  • Increase in process energy

Dry Hobbing
Dry hobbing is actually a gear hobbing process that does not involve any use of the cutting oil. The machine can easily run with a very good hob circumferential speed. The dry hobbing process works with a latest technology where compressed air is used for blowing off the generated chips. It allows the workpiece to remain in a cool condition that it is possible to handle it even with bare hands just after the operation process is completed.

Advantages of Dry Cutting Process
  • Increased productivity due to high-speed cutting and improved cycle times.
  • A easy process because of hobbing of hardened workpieces.
  • Drastic reduction in cost due to no use of cutting oil.
  • Improved work environment.
