Detect Water Leaking to Prevent Water Loss

Content: Water leaking is the major problem for underground water system and where you have used the whole house water filter. The main reasons for water leaking are the poor valves, incompetent corrosion protection and mechanical damage. The loss of water is not the only associated problem but water leak also increases the energy consumption because extra energy is required to raise the pressure to normal level that is dropped because of water leak.

Water Leak Detection
With technological advancement many new water leak detection equipments have been invented. The best one is the sonic water leak detection system that uses the sound of water running out of pipe to detect the leak. In this comes the pin-point listening devices and geophones. The pin-point listening devices are used on valves and hydrants whereas the geophones works directly on ground. Besides this there one more detection equipment for water leaking, which is correlator device that is capable to listen two points at a time.

Large water leaks are easily detected so not much water is lost because of them. But it is the undetected water leaks that are more harmful to the total water system and environment. So efforts must be done to detect the water leaking and rectifying the problem of water leaks.

Ways to Detect Water Leaking A Home
If you doubt of water leaking at your home then you must cross check all the water leak equipments to find out water leak in either domestic or sprinkler irrigation system.

  • The first step is turn off all the taps, showers and other water using appliances and outlets so no water is used by any of them. To turn off the water sprinkler (if you have that in home), first turn off the controller and then shut the two valves at double check valve assembly (DCVA) manually.
  • Go to the meter box and take the lid off. Lift its protective cover.
  • On your water meter a leak indicator is given in red or silver triangle and a black round disc.
  • If the leak indicator is spinning then you have a water leak. If it is not spinning but the meter dial hand is moving then also your water system has the water leaking that needs to be checked.
  • If nothing is happening then note the reading of meter dial hand. After ten minutes again note the reading. If it has moved a bit then also there is a water leak but of small size. If it is still then there are not water leaks in your water system.
  • Next step if you have a water leak is to turn off the main shut off valve that lies close to meter box.
  • To check if the shut off valve is working properly or not turn on any one faucet in your home. If water is coming out of it means your shut off valve is not working properly. If no water is coming out of the faucet means your shut off valve is working properly.

Return to meter and check its hands. If the meter hand is moving means water leaking is occurring between main shut-off valve and meter.
