Checking Bearing Clearances on an Engine

Share  |

Proper installation of crankshaft is extremely necessary for a long running internal combustion engine. The durability of crankshaft, more or less, depends on the bearing clearances. Overtly tight engine bearing clearances as well as overtly loose ones too can effect the crankshaft adversely. Here is a step by step procedure to check the bearings clearances on the engine.

Step 1
The First thing to do is to clean the back side of bearings using lint-free rags. Each bearing half with oil groove needs to be laid in each of the main saddle of the engine block. Now the other half of each bearing has to be laid into the corresponding bearing main cap. The oil holes and the bearing tabs must line up with the recesses in the engine block. Make sure you don't hammer or lubricate the bearing halves.

Step 2
Wipe the surfaces of the bearings in the engine block and the crankshaft journals using lint-free rags. Also, look for dust and dirt in the oiling holes and then clean accordingly.

Step 3
Next, put the crankshaft back into the position on the main bearings.

Step 4
Trim out the several plastic gauges to make them slightly shorter then the width of the main bearings. Align one piece each on the crank journal with the crankshaft's axis.

Step 5
Now clean the bearing surfaces in the main caps using lint free rags. Place back each cap on it position on the crankshaft assembly in such a way that the caps point towards the front of the engine cautiously without disturbing the plastic gauge material.

Step 6
a thin coat of oil needs to be applied onto the main cap bolt threads to install them within their holes afterwards.

Step 7
check out the torque specifications and tightening sequences mentioned by the manufacturers and tighten the cap bolts accordingly, using torque wrench machine. The crankshaft should not be rotated at all during this procedure.

Step 8
remove the cop bolts without effecting the plastic gauge material. Keep their order with the respective main journal intact. In case any cap is being difficult to remove then you would need to use a soft hammer to tap it lightly side to side so as to loosen them up a bit.

Step 9
Determine the bearing clearance by measuring the width of the cranckshaft journal's crushed plastic gauge material with a measuring scale.

Step 10
go through the manufacturer's documented specifications to see if the clearance are within appropriate tolerances.
