Broaching of Gears

Broaching is a typical machining process of cutting shapes. It is done by the movement of a tool that is known as the broach cutting tool, or simply a broach, over materials like metal or plastics. With movement there is gradual increase in the size of a broach's rows of teeth, or what is known as chisels. Each tooth of a broach is capable of removing surplus material gradually. Finally the process is complete, when the desired shape is obtained after passing of the final broach tooth over the material. A Broaching process of gears is shown in the image.

Internal Gear Broaching
In a typical broaching process of gears, a stepped broach that has multiple rows of cutting edges, is used. They extract material gradually till the final form is ready. To do the cutting a broach is pushed through the bore of a part. The broaching process is also a good option to manufacture helical internal splines. The basic difference is that the rows of the cutting teeth get machined and subsequently ground through the helix angle of a spline. With the pushing of the broach along the bore of the workpiece, there is natural turning of the broach towards the helix angle and a helical spline is produced. Whether it is internal gear broaching or an internal spline broaching, a broach of a specific size of the requisite spline must be used every time.

Braoching Machines
Various kinds of Broaching machines are today used for manufacturing of gears some of those are illustrated here.

Vertical Broaching Machines
Vertical broaching is the type of machine which is used for broaching a piece part. The Vertical Broaching Machine comes in various types. All suited to different adaptations. To give a more specific example, a machine where there is vertical mounting of ram instead of the horizontal, can be called as a vertical broaching machine.

Horizontal Broaching Machine
Horizontal Broaching Machine refers to the machines that are applied for broaching a piece part. These were the first line of machines to be used for this process and still retain its popularity. Horizontal broaching machines are a popular option to cut internal shapes of the gears.
