Brazing Process Precautions & Safety Measures

Brazing process needs to be undertaken with a set of precautions and guidelines so that it is safe for the people involved in carrying it out and is successful in terms of the proper and optimum utilization of the resources and the costs involved. Here are some of the important precautions and safety measures that should be observed during the brazing process.

Proper Safety Equipments
Fumes emitted during the brazing process contain infra red and UV rays . To ensure complete protection from these harmful rays it is very important to wear proper shielding equipments while carrying out the brazing process. Brazing goggles to cover and protect the eyes, welding helmets, heat & chemical resistant leather gloves are a few of the safety equipments that must be used in order to maintain complete safety from any harmful emissions or accidents that take place during the brazing process.

Material Knowledge
It is important to have complete, exact and accurate information on all the materials that are being used in the brazing process. What is to be used, when, where and how it is to be used, each and every aspect of the base and the filler usage should be clearly and well understood. For example, the knowledge of gas emissions that take place when zinc or lead or cadmium undergo the brazing process. Recognizing the coatings and removing them before the heating starts is an essential precaution that one needs to take during the process execution.

Similarly for the fillers – know your filler metals and their respective characteristics well. Different filler metals need different levels of heat to be maintained for the brazing process. Read the warning label carried by the filler metal and follow the instructions.

Thorough Base Metal Cleaning
Surface contamination that takes place due to the leftover flux, oil, grease etc can be harmful in two major ways: - One, it might release harmful fumes and gases when exposed to heat. Two, if anything remains inside a joint, it leads to early ruining of the braze. Therefore it is important to clean the base metal thoroughly before the brazing process in order to minimize any voids in the joint and to avoid harmful fume and gas emissions during the heating of the base metals.

Proper Heating
Ensure that the base metal is free of any residual lubricants and fluxes. Proper heating includes broad and uniform heating of the metals instead of sharp local heating that intensifies the heat using up brazing flux and increases the possibility of dangerous fume emissions.

Ensure Ventilation
As mentioned above numerous times, the brazing process emits a number of harmful gases and fumes that are pose health hazards for people involved in the process. For safety purposes, proper ventilation arrangements should be made in the premise to get go of these fumes and gas emissions. Use ventilating equipments like fans, exhaust hoods and respirators.
Use Brazing Flux

To serve its basic purpose of preventing oxidation during the process and re oxidation of the brazed joint it is important to be sure of the flux quantity that is to be put on the base metal. Mitigate the fume emissions and oxidation possibilities by using sufficient amount of flux.
Expert Surveillance

Brazing process requires well qualified and sufficiently trained people to successfully and safely carry out it out . So make sure you staff is equip with adequate theoretical knowledge and substantial hands-on experience.
