Acetylene Plant Applications
Share |

Acetylene is a synthesis gas produced from the reaction of calcium carbide with water. It is colorless, has a strong garlic order and is highly unstable. It produces a very hot flame when combined with oxygen.
Generally, any industry that uses acetylene is a potential user of Acetylene Plants. The following is a partial list of its usages in various industries : -
Glass, Cement and Lime
Acetylene is a combustible gas mainly used in automatic lubrification for glass bottle production moulding.
Laboratories and Analysis
Acetylene is the fuel gas in atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS).
Welding, Cutting and Coating
Acetylene is the most effective and versatile fuel gas; C
2H
2 enabling manual applications such as welding, brazing, cutting, straightening or any other localised heating process. It is widely used in oxacetylene welding.
Mining
Acetylene was earlier used in carbide miner's lamps but the flames were a safety hazard in mines where methane was present. These lamps were replaced by battery powered lamps.
Chemical Synthesis
The synthetic potential of acetylene paves way to its various applications in the chemical industries, e. g. for production of perfume components, vitamins, polymer-additives, solvents for construction industries, surface-active compounds.
