About Digital Multimeter - How to Use a Digital Multimeter?

Digital multimeter are becoming the hot selling electronic equipment because of its easy to use and accuracy feature. Digital multimeter are more accurate than the analog multimeter. This can be used to rectify many electronic problems at home as well. Multimeter is also known as VOM i.e. Volt/Ohm-Milliampere Meter. Also it is a very handy test equipment that is now in the toolbox of every technician and handyperson.

Digital multimeter has accuracy of about 0.5% on DC voltage. Digital multimeter display the reading in numbers. With digital multimeter you can easily measure the voltage, resistance and current. Digital multimeter is widely used to find faults in different electrical equipments that are used in different industries and even at homes.

Before using digital multimeter on any kind of electronic appliance make sure that you are not performing the “continuity” test function. These means that the appliance should not have the live voltage connection or direct on connection to power supply.

How to Use a Digital Multimeter?
  • Disconnect the power of the electronic appliance.
  • Set the multimeter dial to Resistance (Ohms).
  • Two test probes Red "positive" and the Black "negative". Touch these to test. By touching the two test probes together, the digital multimeter should show the zero resistance.
  • To start with do an easy and standard test of checking the voltage of a standard light bulb.
  • For this take the light bulb out of the socket and place one test probe on the bottom of the light bulb
  • Touch another test probe to the threaded part of light bulb socket
  • Continuity or zero resistance on the digital multimeter will show that light bulb is of good condition.
  • If no continuity is shown on the multimeter then it means that the light bulb is not of good quality and might have a broken filament.

NOTE: Never test any electronic equipment with power on. Always disconnect its power or current source before checking.

After reading the digital multimeter instructions carefully you will be able to check the more detailed and complicated electrical test. Also this instrument can measure the alternating current or AC or household current and direct current or DC in a live circuit. In AC current, digital multimeter can test the voltage up to 120 volts and in DC batteries it can tel if the battery is fully charged or weak.

With efficient digital multimeter, work can be accomplished in a shortest span of time.
