Engineering sector is the largest segment of Indian industries, entailing a strong industrial and capital goods base. The important groups within the engineering industry include machinery & instruments, castings, forgings, fasteners, electronic goods and project exports. Engineering is the field of attaining and applying scientific, technical, and mechanical knowledge to develop, design, and produce machinery, systems, apparatus, structures, and mechanism which actualize the intended objective. The wide swath of engineering encompasses a great deal of specialized sub-disciplines with precise emphasis on the particular realm of technology and its application.

 

• The engineering sector employs over 4 million skilled and semi-skilled workers (direct and indirect).
• For the quarter ended June 2007, the total engineering production was about US$ 5 billion.
• The power & infrastructure sectors are the largest contributor to the revenues of engineering companies.
• The industrial segment contributes to around 30 per cent of the total revenues of the engineering sector.
• FDI inflows of US$ 1,196.73 million from August 1991-July 2006
• Exports of engineering goods in 2006-07 - US$ 27 billion (36% growth year on year)
• 40% of India’s engineering export is from the small and medium enterprises (SME) sector.
