Switch Materials

Switches are used to allow or disallow the flow of electric current through the circuit. When switches are put off the flow of electricity is disconnected and the devices connected to the switch stops working. When switches are put on the flow of electricity starts passing through the devices and they start to work. Switches are made of different types of materials depending on the applications in various fields. But most of the switches are made of mainly metals and plastics.
Plastic Switches
Plastic switches are one of the popular and most widely used switches among all categories of electrical switches. Various types of plastics are used to make different types of switches. Bakelite was the first thermosetting plastic which was first used in 1907 to make switches. It is a very popular plastic for making all type of switches. They are very durable and strong.
Thermosetting Plastic Switches
All types of switches are made of thermosetting plastics. It is also called thermosetting polymer. Chemically they are long chain molecules which are cross linked to other similar chains. Thermosetting plastic material on heating cannot be repeatedly melted-molded. The reason for their resistance to repeated molding is the cross links. These cross links prevent the displacement of polymer chains on heating. Due to it they don't become soft on heating. Bakelite is an important thermosetting plastic used for making switches. Toggle switches, rotary switches, pushbutton switches are some important types of switches which are made of thermosetting plastics.
Metallic Switches
Metallic switches are very durable and used in a lot of applications. They are widely used in industrial applications, home purposes, organizational functions etc. The most common metals used in making electrical switches are brass, and stainless steel. Sometimes iron and aluminum are also used for constructing specific switches. The metallic switches are helpful in those industries where switches are more prone to heat damage, chemical interactions, or any other physical mishap.
Specifications of electric switch materials
-
Durability: The materials used for making switches should be durable so that at least they could withstand the heat produced by the flow of electric currents through the switches. The level of durability varies from material to material and also depend on the application.
-
Applicability: The electrical switch materials used should be applied in all environments and temperatures.
-
Safety: Switches made of either metals or plastics or any other material, the safety of the user and the devices are most important. Before deciding selection of the material for switches safety should be your first priority.
