Electrical Conduit for Safe and Protected Wiring

What is an Electrical Conduit?
Electrical conduit is an electrical piping system that is basically used for protecting and routing the electrical wires. Material used to make electrical conduit can be plastic, metal, fired clay or fiber as the specific electrical wires need special electrical conduit.

Advantages of Electrical Conduit
  • It provides absolute protection against moisture, chemical vapors and physical impact.
  • Very sensitive circuits can be protected from electromagnetic rays by using metal electrical conduit.
  • If sealed and installed properly, electrical conduit can stop the flammable gases and vapors to enter into conduit. This greatly reduces the chances of fire and explosion.

Types of Electrical Conduit
  • Rigid Metal Conduit (RMC) - Thick threaded tube made up of stainless steel, coated steel or aluminum.
  • Rigid Nonmetallic Conduit (RNC) - Unthreaded non-metallic tube.
  • Galvanized Rigid conduit (GRC) - GRC is a galvanized steel tubing with thick tubing wall that can be threaded if required.
  • Electrical Metallic Tubing (EMT) - It is a thin walled less costly and lighter in weight than GRC so more commonly used. Both GRC and EMT are used in industrial and commercial fittings rather than residential.
  • Electrical Nonmetallic Tubing (ENT) - It is a thin walled corrugated tubing that is both moisture resistant as well as flame retardant.
  • Flexible Metallic Conduit (FMC) - FMC has the self-interlocked ribbed strip of aluminum or steel. This type of electrical conduit is installed in dry areas where non flexible and EMT are difficult to install.
  • Liquid tight Flexible Metal Conduit (LFMC) - It comes with waterproof plastic coating.
  • Flexible Metallic Tubing (FMT)
  • Liquid tight Flexible Nonmetallic Conduit (LNFC) - LNFC is the flame-resistant non-metallic tubing.
  • Aluminum Conduit - It is a very rigid electrical conduit that is quiet similar to galvanized steel conduit.
  • Intermediate Metal Conduit (IMC) - IMC is heavier than EMT but its weight is less than RMC.
  • PVC Conduit - The PVC electrical conduit are the lightest conduit and are very low in cost. It has three varieties and the thin one is suitable to be used in concrete whereas the heavier grades can be buried directly.
  • Metal Conduits - Different metallic conduits like stainless steel, brass and bronze conduits are used in extreme weather conditions.

Electrical Conduit Fittings
Steel bar saddles, galvanized half saddle saddles, steel  sockets, conduit clamps, galvanized iron steel  circular boxes, flanges, couplers, conduit clamps conduit elbows, tees and bends are few of the electrical conduit fittings.
