Door Hinges
Pivot hinges are one of the most popularly used hinges for doors, window and cabinets. Though pivot hinges can be installed on windows, cabinets and doors, they are mostly used in doors. The pivot hinges for doors can be used for overlay doors, recessed doors or flush doors. Pivot hinges generally attach to the top and bottom of a door. They are also referred as double-acting floor hinge.
Advantage of Using Pivot Hinge
One of the advantages of the door pivot hinge is that it requires no door frame for mounting. These pivot hinges for door are designed for both left-hand and right-handed installations. They are also suitable for overlay type installations. Another advantage is that they allow the door to open in both directions and return to the closed position automatically. A pivot hinge is used basically used to hang a door and allow for proper swing of the door. Instead of the traditional hinges, pivot hinges are used in heavy doors or in doors which are of maximum usage. A pivot door hinge allows for easy maneuverability of a larger door with little effort.

Types of Pivot Door Hinges
- Offset Pivot Hinge:Consisting of two separate pieces, there is the top pivot at the top of the door and the bottom pivot at the bottom of the door.
- Center-Hung Door Pivot Hinge: A center-hung pivot is attached to the center of the door, having a top and bottom component, and connecting the door to the floor and frame.
- Intermediate Door Pivot Hinge: An intermediate pivot is placed on the edge of the door at mid-height. They are only used in combination with top and bottom pivots, whether center hung or offset.
- Side Jamb Pivot Hinge:This type of pivot hinge is used when the pivot cannot be fastened to the head of the frame. Side jamb pivot hinge is used to hang frameless doors. It is also used in weak structured frames which cannot support the weight of the door.
- Specialty Applications Pivot Door Hinges: There are some pivot hinges specially designed to be used in special applications. Like for instance: Asylum pivots.These pivots are applicable in detention and institutional facilities to reduce the risk of hanging. Instead of a squared edge, they have a sloped top pivot. There are lead-lined pivots installed in lead panels in a lead-lined door and used in hospitals where X-rays and MRI machines are operating. A normal pivot will not work with lead doors.

Finishes on Pivot Hinges
As hinges are very essential for smooth opening and closing of doors, the strength and durability of hinges are very important. In order to make them more durable and resistance to tarnishing, pivot door hinges are given fine finishes over metal surfaces. Satin chrome, polished brass and antique finishes are very common among pivot hinges.
