Clog and Types of Shower Drains

A shower drain is actually a plumbing fixture that is placed between shower enclosure and a drainage pipe. Shower drain usually does not take your attention that loudly which other bathroom accessories and fittings take. But when you experience the low drainage of water from the bathroom then at that time it attracts your attention as this is the time when your shower drain needs help.

Parts of Shower Drain
Shower drain is made up of a grid, strainer, vent and trap.
Grid consists of small holes that allows water to pass through it.
Grid is followed by strainer that restricts the entry of large particles, which can clog the drainage.
Then is the trap which is a U-shaped pipe for blocking the sewer gases from entering back into bathroom.
Vent is for the air pressure.

Types of Shower Drains
  • Stainless Steel Shower Drain
  • Linear shower drains
  • Square shower drains

Stainless steel shower drains are the most effective and common to use as these are really simple and can be lifted to clean the drain whenever required. But while buying make sure that you are buying the proper size of it. You can look for the different finishes of stainless steel shower drains that can be chrome, wrought iron, gold, brass, nickel, platinum and silver.

Linear shower drain is a slim and very trendy type of shower drain that is installed in the form of restrained strip on the floor. It runs along the length of the shower and does not allow water to strike against the wall that does in the normal centrally place shower drains.

Square shower drains are replacing the old round shower drains as these look trendier than the later. California Faucets has recently come up with beautiful four types of square shower drains. These elegantly beautify the bathroom and give it a distinctive look. Easy to work upon and stylish in look, the square shower drains are without any screws on the visible part.

Shower Drain Clogging
Shower drain clogging is the most common issue that is handled in the most used bathroom. This is the place where lots of hair fall and debris is expected because of bathing. The regular accumulation of these things leads to shower drain clogging that makes the drainage of water very difficult. So you need to clean this regularly. The best way is to clear it after every wash.

To clear the clogged shower drain first of all loosen the screws with screwdriver and remove the shower drain cover. Now with the help of flash light or torch look down the drain and check the clogging. Take the metal hanger or plunger and put this down the drain to get the clog out. Pump the plunger for 15 to 20 time with tap water on. Again check if the clog has come out a bit or not. If not then repeat the process with plunger again. If you are not able to pull the clog with metal hanger then use the plumber's snake to get the clog out. If nothing is working then get some chemical cleaner from the nearby store and apply it is as per the directions.

But avoid chemical cleaners as far as you can as they can harm your bathroom floor as well as other fittings if not used properly. Also many kinds of health problems are associated with chemical cleaners.

Another very quick and easy way to clear the clogged shower drain is to put a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar down the drain. This will break down the existing clog. After 20 minutes put hot water in the drain. This will clear the shower drain.
