Selection Tips for Garage Dehumidifiers

Share  |

It is seen in most cases that even if your car is kept inside a garage and fully covered so that your car is fully protected from dust and scratches, it is seen that even then your car and tools inside the car become damp and rust and which ultimately damage your car. This happens because of corrosion which is caused by condensation. The moisture laden air in the garage migrates to the cold surfaces of the car and tools as they are denser than air. Condensation is formed on the surfaces because the surrounding air warms up quickly than the denser object and warm air moves over to a cold surface.

Spaces like car garages are not usually serviced by HVAC units and sometimes they can become very stuffy because of excess humidity. If the humidity level in your garage becomes intolerable, then you can solve this problem by installing a dehumidifier in your garage. The dehumidifier reduces the moisture in the air.

How does a Dehumidifier Works?
Dehumidifiers work essentially by creating condensation. A dehumidifier extracts moisture from the air. It pulls the moist, warm air into the dehumidifier. It cools the air and the moist air is drained out and the dry air is sent back into the room. A dehumidifier in a garage can prevent moisture damage. It reduces the possibility of corrosion. It provides greater comfort. A dehumidifier can also keep the leather and fabric seats inside the car dry preventing mould growth. Overall, a garage dehumidifier plays a vital role in keeping you car look new, polished and dry.

Selection Tips for Garage Dehumidifiers
Here are some factors to consider before purchasing a garage dehumidifier.
  • Size: Choose a dehumidifier that is suitable for the size of your garage. Dehumidifiers are usually chosen as per the amount of moisture (in pints) that can be extracted from the air per day. The next is to find out how many square feet area the humidifier can keep dry. That is why when you buy a dehumidifier for your garage, you have to know the area of your garage. If the square foot area of your garage is near the top end of a dehumidifier’s promised capacity, buy the next larger size
  • Room Temperature: The room temperature is the temperature in which your dehumidifier works best. But most often the garage temperature is cooler than an average indoor room. So you have to buy a dehumidifier that operates efficiently at low or cold temperatures.
  • Noise: Dehumidifiers make noise when they operate and some make more noise than the others. So before purchasing, check the noise. Prefer one which do not produce much noice when it operates.
  • Outlets: Dehumidifiers need to be plugged in. That is why it is necessary that your garage has a grounded outlet.
  • Draining: The moisture that is pulled in by a dehumidifier is stored in a tank that has to be removed and emptied on a regular basis. However, some dehumidifiers can drain water continuously through a hose. It is better to buy a garage dehumidifier that provides the option of continuous drainage if your garage has a floor drain.
