Air Bags: The Safety Balloons

Share  |

Air bags as most of the people know, are the safety bags which safeguard the driver and the passenger on the frontal seat during any kind of mishap. An air bag is actually an inflatable balloon like structure , placed on both driver and passenger sides. In case the vehicle collides with something then the air bags inflate within a fraction of second and protect the driver and passengers from head on collision. Following are few air bag safety facts issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSA), United States :

  • In most situations the air bags are set to deploy in a moderate-to-severe frontal crash.
  • Ideally, all passenger vehicles including trucks, vans and SUVs should be equipped with air bags.
  • A research has concluded that if all the passenger vehicles are loaded with air bags then more then 3,000 lives can saved each year.
  • Statistically, air bags cut short the death rate in frontal crashes by 26% (drivers with seat belts) and 32% percent (drivers without seat belts). For frontal passengers, the death rates are reduced by 14% (passengers with seat belts) and 23% (passengers without seat belts).
  • Ironically, people who are positioned extremely close to an air bag at the time of its deployment carry the risk of severe injuries.
  • According to a survey, most of the air bag deaths have occurred due to either non-use of seat belts or wrong placement of passenger at the time of crash
