Nepalese Carpets

In Nepal before 1960, whatever little number of carpets that were produced were for the domestic market and that too were not of the good quality. Tibetan refugees initiated the process of better quality knotted carpets. The region in and around Kathmandu are the main production center of the Nepalese carpets.

 

Design, Pattern and Motif
The traditional patterns are influenced by the Buddhist arts and motifs. However, in the recent years modern motifs have also been included. The designs are also influenced by the Chinese motifs. The designs are first drawn on a graph and then mapped on the loom. The Nepalese carpets are low to medium quality in terms of knot density, density ranges from 60-120 knots per square inch. They use high quality wool for the piles, though the base may be cotton.

 

 

The Nepalese carpets have a distinct luster similar to the Tibetan carpets because of unique knotting style and different quality of wool. They resemble a lot with the Persian carpets but are more affordable than them.

 

Material
Wool is the major material out of which Nepal rugs and carpets are manufactured. The area rugs and carpets of Nepal are hand knotted using high-quality wool for a dense and thick pile, with an extra-soft texture.

 

The wool used in the Nepal carpets is the best imaginable for carpet weaving. It is highly resilient, tough and flexible. When you walk on it, it feels springy. When you touch it, it gives very soft experience because it is rich in lanolin. Its appearance is particularly pleasing, with a soft glow that comes from its high content of lustrous hair. The whole process is completed by hand, from the washing of the wool in icy clear mountain streams, to the final clipping of the carpet, giving the wool its unique texture and appearance.

Nepal is also one of the major center for weaving different types of Tibetan carpets. Some best quality of the Tibetan carpets are woven in Nepal. Tibetan carpet in Nepal are manufactured still in a old fashion way using hand spun Tibetan yarn and vegetable dyes. Tibetan rugs and carpets are woven with thick, lustrous and dense pile in amazing variety of colors.

 

The manufacturing process of Tibetan rug in Nepal involves the wrapping of a continuous length of yarn over a rod laid across the warps stretched on the loom. After the rod has been wrapped for its entire length, a knife is used to cut the wrapped yarn into two rows of pile tufts.
