Spacious patterns, bold floral designs and high decorative value these are the Mahal carpets. Mahal is neither a tribe nor a village but used for a place called Mahallat. They are average quality carpets with prominent designs. Some of the patterns may be all-over scrolling vines and large palms. The patterns can be tribal or curvature type.
The yarn is dyed in pure natural colors. Colors are dark red, blue, soft green, gold, and ivory. The wrap and wefts are of cotton and pile of soft wool, the weave is not tight and is coarse. The pile loops are tied using Turkish knots.
The wool used is soft and lustrous but the carpets are not very durable. The wrap is usually cotton though the weft can be cotton or wool. The wefts are double and the piles are tight yet they are loosely woven. Knot count is around 120 knots per square inch. the colors commonly used are Dark red, khaki and blue. They are average quality carpets valued by their patterns and not by the density.
