Kashmar is the largest province of Iran and carpet weaving started here some 150 years back. Kashmar designs featuring Kase Boshghab (Bowl & Plate), Case Kozeh (bowl & flowerpot), Zir Khaki, Lachak Toranj became very famous internationally. The designs are borrowed from other styles and modified. The designs also include tree motifs, mehrabs, minarets, and floral repetitions.
The basic color schemes also comes from other areas but the weaver's true artistry shows in color individuality. Light blue , cream and ivory are predominating base colors. They are soft wool carpets thin and with tight piles. Though the wrap is cotton, the weft may be wool or cotton. Average knots per square inch varies from 120 to 840.
Even though the colors and the patterns are largely borrowed, the quality of the kashmar rugs is medium to high and that is what makes a kashmar carpets distinct. It is one of the seeked for type in the international arena even though it does not have much of an antique value.
