How Hooked Rugs are Made?
Hooked rugs are manufactured by hooking narrow strips of woolen fabric into a backing material. Loops are used to form the pile. This is done by raising the loops above the backing. By hooking shades of varying colors of wool, designs are formed. Very few of the hooked rugs of the early period survived today because the backing material used earlier was of the poor quality and also most of the women saw their rugs strictly as utilitarian pieces and placed no value on saving them. Once the manufacturing of rug is completed, a protective backing cloth is applied. In order to to accentuate the details in the design, many times rugs are hand carved.
