Embroidered Carpets

Embroidered carpets and embroidered rugs are manufactured by applying stitches to a cloth (often linen) base. These carpets are not formed on a loom. The details are finely executed with great craftsman ship and it takes almost a year to weave a single carpet with rich embroidery. There are two types of stitches generally used to make embroidered carpets. These stitches are- the tent stitch and the cross stitch.
 
Embroidered carpets have no single pattern, design or method of construction. The designs and the patterns vary with geography, history and cultural tradition.
 

 

Embroidery on a carpet is an age old practice. However initially it was woven only for royal courts, nobility and aristocracy. The craftsmen were especially deployed by the courts to weave embroidered carpets. Embroidery was accomplished using golden and silver threads and semi precious stones. The designs and patterns were inspired from local traditions and the cultural belief.
 
Embroidered carpets and embroidered rugs are considered as one of the most prized home decor items. They can provide vibrancy to any environment and enhance the look of the place in which they are installed.
 
Persian Embroidered Carpets
Persian embroidery is one of the valued art form that is practice since ages. The motifs and designs embroidered on the carpets differ from region to region in Iran. Persian embroidery utilizes the floral, geometrical Persian figures, animals, and patterns related to hunting as the popular motifs on the carpets. Some of the traditional designs like allover Shah Abbas, vase, tree of life and pictorial schemes are also depicted exquisitely on these carpets.

 

Kashmir Embroidered Carpets
Kashmir embroidery popularly called as kashida, is executed with great precision on the carpets. The designs embroidered on the carpets take their theme from the scenic beauty of the region. Popular motifs on the carpets are flowers, creepers and chinar leaves, fruits, etc. The embroidery is affected on one of the following- silk, wool or a combination of the two. Wool pile is more common.

 

Turkish Embroidered Carpets
Carpet and rug manufacturing in Turkey is a century old practice. It reflects the Turkish way o life, culture and belief. Art is largely Mohammedan. Embroidery is done by hands. The yarn chosen are either wool or cotton or silk. The yarns are color dyed. The embroidery is done keeping in mind the color scheme. Geometric, floral and zoological patterns are common. The medallions used on the carpets are very large single or multiple medallions. Medallions are of different shapes like square, diamond, star or hexagon shapes.
