Types of Webbings and Webbings Applications

There are various webbings made of different types of fabrics like nylon, cotton, jute, polyester, polypropylene etc. Some of these are prepared with specialized characteristics like reflective property (which reflects when it comes in contact with light) and rigidity etc. However, when talking about the basic structure of webbings, there are two types of webbings- flat webbings and tubular webbings.

Basically there are two types of webbings- Tubular webbing and Flat webbing.

Flat Webbing
Flat webbings are woven with flat construction. A flat webbing is thicker and stronger than the other type of webbing. It is also more effective in resisting abrasion. Due to these qualities flat webbing is mostly used in harsher and abrasive environments such as in heavy rescue operations.

Tubular Webbing
As against the flat structure of the flat webbings, the tubular webbing has a tube like structure with a hollow center. A tubular webbing is lightweight, strong, and very easy to handle. They are mostly used for light applications like in recreational sport. Tubular webbings may be constructed with shuttle loom or needle loom.

Webbing Applications
Webbings are versatile accessories that are used for various applications including such common activities as crafts, especially textile crafts to specifically high performance industrial applications. Some of the industries that make extensive use of webbings include automotive, furniture, transportation, apparel, sporting goods etc.

Automotive Webbing
Seat belt webbing is the classic example of webbings used in the automotive industry. However the belt webbing straps are not the only type of webbing used by this industry. Belt webbing is also used for catch belts for airbags, straps and binding for luggage nets, pull straps, helmet straps etc. all are used extensively in automotive vehicles. Nylon and polyester webbings are used widely for auto racing safety. Polypropelene webbings are used in making of window nets to prevent objects from entering the driver's compartment in a vehicle.

Furniture Webbing
Furniture and upholstery webbings are mostly made of fabrics like cotton, hemp, jute, elastic webbings etc. A fabric webbing is used in construction of upholstery accessories like strings for curtains and sofa covers etc. Latex or rubber webbings are used for seating portions of such furniture as sofas or chairs as they should have elasticity to give support. Stretchy webbings are sometimes used as an alternative to springs in furniture too. Most of the lawn furniture webbings are used for seating areas and also to reinforce joints and furniture areas that tend to flex.

Transportation Webbing
There are a number of transportation webbings used for such materials as tie downs, tie straps, cargo straps, E-track straps, cargo hoist straps, tow ropes, winch straps, cargo nets, etc. These are mainly used by shipping and trucking companies as well as by packers and movers. Ratchet tie-down straps are used for securing boats, motorcycles, ATVs, etc. while soft strap tie-down extensions are used as strap extensions where a strap end with no hardware is preferred.

Apparel Webbing
The garment industry as well as fashion accessories industry use fabric webbing and other types of webbings like rubber and leather webbing straps for making such items as belts, suspenders, sandals and purses.

Sport Webbing
Webbings are also used for sporting goods. The sport webbings are used for tie down, bags, backpacks, outdoor gear, slings, runners, harnesses, anchor extensions etc. Polyester webbing is considered a very high performance webbing to be used for such sporting goods. For certain sports like rock climbing, nylon webbing is used in slings, runners, harnesses, anchor extensions and quickdraws.
