Distinct Indian Embroidery Patterns

India is a diversified country having distinctive range of customs and cultures. The various patterns of Indian embroidery have become world famous and are in demand. These embroidery styles in India are also as diverse as the religions followed and the languages spoken in the country. Almost every region of India has a distinct style of embroidery pattern, practiced since generations together. Here are few of the well known patterns and also have gained fame in terms of popularity in international market.

 

Mirror Embroidery
Mirror embroidery is practiced in Gujarat state. Mirror work is never done alone, and is in combination with other types of stitches and bead work. This embroidery is embellished with both large and small mirrors and basically it was more utilized by “Jat” community. It is embroidered using colorful threads like maroon, yellow, red, green, blue etc.

Kantha Embroidery
Kantha is the traditional form of embroidery, practiced in West Bengal. This particular kind of embroidery is actually a running style of stitch. The embroidery is done on many layers of cloth. It is done on salwar suits, stoles, quilts, bedsheets, blankets, saris, napkins etc.

Zardozi Embroidery
Zardozi work is an extension of zari embroidery which is done with crochet hook. This particular embroidery gives the appearance of chain stitch. The materials required for doing zardozi embroidery are sequins, dabka, beads, coiled wires etc. As zardozi is done with coiled metal wires studded with beads, stones etc is heavy in weight therefore is done on fabrics that are thick and heavy like crepe, stain, silk, velvet etc. Thus the choice of fabrics is also royal and expensive.

 

Banjara Embroidery
The Banjaras, are a nomadic tribe settled in Rajasthan, practice a distinguish style of embroidery. It is popularly came to known as 'Banjara embroidery'. Sometimes, in Banjara embroidery, pieces of cowries, gold, silver, animal bones, mirrors are also used. Banjara embroidery looks very colorful and vibrant.
