Customary Indian Embroidery Styles

Indian embroidery style occupies a place of pride and prime importance in the apparel industry. Indian embroidered clothing is all the rage now in the national and international markets, and on ramps the world wide. Embroidery styles in India are many, almost every region of India has a distinct style of embroidery, practiced since generations. Here are some embroidered styles of apparel industry, that are admired for their simplicity.
 
Kantha Embroidery
Kantha embroidery is a local embroidery style of Bengal, that involves simple running stitches. But the way it is used makes it extra ordinary, the thread for the stitches is drawn from the old saree borders. The design is first traced on cloth, then covered with running stitches. Kantha embroidery, has limitless designs, for every woman. The word 'Kantha', itself means 'embroidered quilt' in Bengali language. The Bengalis used to arrange pieces of fabric in layers and stitch them together into a quilt using a running stitch, that later came to known as Kantha work. Both simple as well as elaborated themes can be used in Kantha work. Usually, images of flowers, animals, gods and goddesses as well as geometric patterns are used as motifs in this particular style of embroidery.

Banjara Embroidery
The Banjaras of Rajsthan, practice a distinct style of embroidery and popularly known as Banjara embroidery. Earlier, Banjara embroidery was restricted to the traditional skirts worn by the women of that particular community. But, with the passage of time, it began to make an appearance on other attire, such as jackets and blouses. Nowadays, this kind of embroidery is found on number of items, ranging from wall hangings, bags and belts to bed spreads.

Banni Embroidery
This particular kind of embroidery, is done by people belonging to the Banni community of Kutch. Famously, known as “Heer Bharat”. Bright colored threads like red, orange, yellow are most commonly used. Mirrors and beads are also used for the added effect.
