Commercial Carpet Buying Tips Size Consideration

Share  |

Commercial carpets of different styles are available in varying sizes and and widths. Commercial managers, building owners or other facility managers can specify the carpet of required length and width after analyzing the style, budget, backing performance needs (moisture impermeability) and facility requirements (installation, floor access). The size options include broadloom, carpet modules and 6-foot carpet in the commercial market.

Broadloom carpet
Broadloom carpet has less seams due to which it can be installed easily and protect the carpet from the moisture. This carpet is mostly preferred in the commercial installation. The width in which this carpet is available are 12 foot, 13'6 feet or 15 foot in width. It comes in different pattern repeats. Initially broadloom carpet was used in commercial installations; however, now end users have various size choices with carpet modules and six-foot carpet.

Six-foot carpet and electronic cables
Six-foot-wide carpet too comes in many designs and variety of backing systems to accommodate performance needs. This carpet is preferred more in the high-rise buildings where transporting a 12-foot roll is difficult or expensive. The width of the carpet is narrow that saves cost where many hallways or other narrow spaces exist. However, careful planning is needed to avoid more seams.

Due to increasing use of electronic cabling in offices and schools, the manufacturers are making carpets with raised access flooring with attached cushion carpet. Manufacturers offer low-profile (2 5/8" high) system with varied configurations. The low profile systems can use as little of the vertical space as 2 ½ inches, a value when the ceiling height is only 8 feet. Modular carpet provides not only underfoot comfort but also reduce noise with a cushion backing. To accommodate extensive wiring, and even duct work for heat and air systems companies offer differing size configurations of raised flooring and depths.

Carpet tile construction and installation
Since the configuration and the planning keeps on changing in the offices and the institutions, the manufacturers are coming up with the carpet tiles which are more technically superior. In the facility where the accommodation of flat electronic wiring is necessary, modular tile may be the best choice.

Installation technique have also changed. Now modular tiles are installed with standard adhesives, releasable adhesives and peel-and-stick adhesives, mill applied. The installation of modular tiles in many of the facility is much more easier as compared traditional carpet installation. In this type of installation, the systems divider panels and office furniture do not have to be removed from the area, but simply lifted with a "jack" system and the tiles are installed underneath. Thus recarpeting of any office can take place in one night shift. This minimum disruption also results in the cost savings.

The materials used for making modular tile backings are polyvinyl chloride (PVC), amorphous resins and polyurethane cushion. The hard backing result in providing the dimensional stability and seam edge integrity for easy pattern matching. Modular tiles with PVC backings are used most in the commercial installation.

Apart from this, there are "hard back" options to PVC backings, which is basically composed of polymeric compounds or amorphous resins that does the same good as PVC. The main advantages drawn from polyurethane cushioned tiles includes comfort underfoot and enhanced stability however the instant perception from employees and visitors remains to be comfortableness and prestige

Tile backing systems can also act as moisture barriers from the base of the pile yarn to the floor, preventing spills from penetrating and seeping down to the subfloor. Broadloom carpets also acts as barriers to moisture. Hence both the modular tiles and the broadloom carpets are essential for humid areas. The moisture barrier prevents the bacterial growth and provide lower long-term maintenance costs.
